Closet Detox Series Week 4: The Ritual of Release
Now that you’ve made your rehoming plan and set your intentions, it’s time to actually remove the items from your closet that you’re sending elsewhere. This week is the heart of our series. The ritual of release. We’re here to offer some different ways to tackle your project, while reminding you, there’s no wrong way. This is a very personal choice and we’re cheering you on!
The Farewell Party
This might hit home if you’re a Sex and the City fan…Invite your besties over, pop some bubbly, cue the playlist, and strut each outfit down the hallway like it’s your final runway walk. Laugh. Reflect. Celebrate how far you’ve come. Maybe they’ll even go home with a few of your statement pieces.
A Sacred Ritual
Keep it private and intentional. You light a candle, make a warm cup of tea, and move slowly through the garments. One by one, you hold each piece in your hands, ask yourself how it makes you feel, and decide if it fits the future you’re stepping into. You can journal your thoughts, speak them into a voice note, or simply let them pass through you.
Glitz and Glam
Make it a full-on theatrical experience. Put on some show tunes with an old Marilyn film playing in the background while donning your satin robe and kitten heels or perhaps switch it out for an 80s metal moment with your favorite hairband screeching while the clothes fly.
Maybe you just want to get down to business, roll up your sleeves and throw out what no longer fits you or your life.
What matters is that you show up for yourself in the way that feels most aligned. This is a moment of both closure and celebration. A merging of the past and future. Whether you want to cry, dance, laugh, or toss those jeans into a bag with no second thought, you get to decide how this ritual lives.
And if you need a little support? Your kids can help. Your best friend can cheer you on via FaceTime. Or you can save the best-of-the-best for a future closet swap or creative costuming session. Remember the treasure chest we talked about? This is where it all starts to take shape.
When you finish, take a moment. Look at your newly liberated space. Breathe into it. Maybe you even want to write a note to yourself or record a short video — a time capsule of who you are right now, in this season of becoming. Because this isn’t just about clothes. This is about you.
You’re making space for your next era. And that, darling, deserves a celebration!
