Closet Detox Series Week 5: The Glow Up

You did it. The hard part is behind you.

The bags are packed, the old versions released, and now you’re standing in front of a blank canvas. Congratulations!! This is your moment to clear the air and call in something new.

Before you start bringing anything back in, it’s time to truly clean the space…and we don’t mean just swiping a duster and calling it good. We’re talking about a sacred reset. This is your invitation to treat your closet like the portal it is.

Start with a gentle, thorough cleaning.

Whether you’ve got wire shelves, wooden built-ins, vintage hardware, or a freestanding rack, take a moment to really see the space. What kind of cleaning product will treat it best? For most closets, low-fragrance or natural options are ideal — especially if your clothes or linens will be stored close to the surfaces. A simple DIY blend of white vinegar, warm water, and a few drops of essential oil like lavender or eucalyptus can do wonders. Wipe down shelves, rods, baseboards, mirrors, and bins. Let the air circulate. Open a window. Burn a little sage or palo santo if that’s your vibe.

Now that it’s physically clean, let’s talk about energy and style. Because this isn’t just a closet anymore — it’s your style sanctuary.

Why not make it extra fabulous?

Don’t underestimate the power of visual delight. A few special touches can elevate the whole vibe.

If you have a walk in, consider an aesthetic as you would for other rooms in your home. Glam it up with a plush throw rug, a stylish chair and even a chandelier for the win!

Should you have a small closet or simply a designated corner rack, be intentional with decor choices. Curate some interesting wall hanging supplies such as vintage hooks and crystal doorknobs to create an art wall of jewelry and accessories. Hang sheer fabric to partition an elegant space for your belongings. Frame and place treasured photos to bring personality or an air of nostalgia.

Get as creative and outlandish as you feel. Remember the point of this is to live as the truest version of yourself. What evokes this being?

Let’s not forget functional magic:

Choose hangers that properly hold your garments, a lovely basket or bin for scarves and belts, a sectioned tray for your sunglasses, daily jewelry and go to pieces. This is your reminder that organization doesn’t have to be boring. Let it be artistic, beautiful, and undeniably YOU!

Bonus idea: Tickle the senses with light fragrance. Perhaps you’d enjoy crafting homemade sachets–fill a small muslin bag with dried lavender, rosemary, or cedar chips. If DIY isn’t your thing, try a reed diffuser with your favorite essential oils.

Above all else, this week is about ownership. Claim this space. Make it feel like a place that supports your becoming. Next week, we step into dressing the space (and you) for your greatest chapter yet!
